When Kasey Studdard was drafted by the Houston Texans this spring,
a third generation in the Studdard family entered the annals of NFL
history. Not only did Kasey's great uncle, Howard Fest (Cincinnati,
Tampa), and his uncle, Les Studdard (Kansas City, Houston), enjoy pro
careers, but his father, Dave Studdard, is one of the all-time great
Broncos. No. 70 anchored the Broncos offensive line for 10 seasons
(1979-88) and could be seen on the pages of Sports Illustrated right
alongside of John Elway during "The Drive."
For 30 years, the name Studdard has been an important part of football in Colorado. Once Dave's playing days were over, Kasey jumped into the spotlight, starring as a four-year starter, a two-time All-State selection and an All-American as a senior at Highland Ranch High School. From there, the youngest Studdard went on to turn in a stellar career at his father and uncle's alma mater – the University of Texas. As a Longhorn, Kasey earned All-Big 12 honors three times and helped guide his team to a national championship in 2005. This season, Kasey is expected to contribute as a rookie with the Texans. Back home, however, Kasey's dad hasn't exactly been sitting around waiting for his son's NFL debut. That's hardly the case, as Dave's been busy with a new business venture. Not surprisingly, the concept doesn't fall too far from the gridiron. Dave, along with business partners Ernie Hassell and former Northern Colorado standout Dave Meyers, is working tirelessly to bring a new line of sports nutrition products to the market. By the end of September, Studdard's line, XTREME Performance, will be concluding its national launch. "With the competitive nature of sports these days, we like the potential in the market," says Dave. "But there are a lot of people – with all the BALCO stuff and steroids going on – who are pretty fearful of what's out there." His partner, Dave Meyers, agrees. "There are so many new supplement companies out there and with all the bad press, who can blame people? They don't want that; they don't want their kids into that," adds Meyers. One major goal of XTREME Performance is to provide a product that people can trust. The product line ranges from hydrates ("Hydro Fuel") and multivitamins ("Force Field") to fat-burning supplements ("Burner X") and protein powders ("Triple XL"), and is made from 100 percent natural ingredients. Since the product is made by athletes, it's made with the needs of athletes in mind. Hassell began research and development on his products after becoming concerned with the inconsistencies he found in other products. Today, athletes like Kasey are proof that his efforts have been worth while. "Kasey used the products to get in shape for the Combine and for camp," says Dave. "His results were pretty astounding. He was in the Combine's top 10 for bench (Kasey hoisted 225 pounds 32 times), he's lean (Kasey lost over seven percent of his body fat), and he's all muscle these days (Kasey came to camp weighing 305 pounds). "Our products aren't going to get you somewhere that's not realistic, but I can guarantee they'll enhance the performance of someone who wants to work hard." That's a respectable testimonial from a father and son tandem who know a little something about competing at the highest levels of their sport. |
